- How many owners has the car had?
- How many miles has it been driven?
- Has the vehicle been in any accidents?
- What damage has it sustained?

Be Observant During the Test Drive
When it’s time to go on a test drive, there are a few things you’ll want to take into consideration as you decide whether the car is right for you. First, give it a once-over before you get inside. Check the exterior for signs of damage, such as rust, and make sure the turn signals, headlights, and taillights all work properly.
When you’re on the road, listen to the engine to make sure it isn’t too loud or making odd banging or clicking noises. You’ll also want to pay attention to the wheel alignment and the performance of the brakes. Additionally, check the radio, the power windows, and the air conditioning and heating system to see that everything works the way it should.
Consult the Vehicle History Report
Be sure to go over the vehicle history report to get a clear picture of what has been reported that the car has been through. The report will also indicate how the vehicle has been taken care of in the past. This information should be available, whether you go through a dealer or a private owner. Otherwise, CARFAX® and AutoCheck are good resources. All you’ll need is the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that you’ll find on the driver’s side dashboard.
